As the chill of winter marches on, we’re focusing this week on another cozy topic. Last week, we explored casual cozy for the mountains—or simply knocking around town. This week, we move into one of the more challenging winter style conversations: city cozy.
So what’s the difference between “knocking around” cozy and city cozy? Both, of course, include chic—because that is always our goal. But city cozy leans a bit more polished and sophisticated, rather than fully relaxed. City dressing naturally calls for a slightly dressier approach, which begs the question: what do you put on that allows you to feel truly warm, cozy, and comfortable, yet still elevates your look? Here, you’ll still feel that warm, cozy comfort we all crave—but with the realities of city life in mind. In the city, winter isn’t just cold, it’s often windy too. Brrr. So the idea becomes keeping that same sense of cozy well-being while looking a bit sleeker in how we put ourselves together. You’re still warm and cozy, just with a sexier, more elevated twist to your look.
That’s exactly what we’re addressing here.
This week, I’ve split the looks into two clear categories to make shopping easier and more intuitive. One group focuses on warm, luxe neutrals—from winter white to camel to rich chocolate brown. The other is all about black, in its chicest, most city-ready form.
Within each color story, you’ll find boots, colored denim, sweaters, puffers, and cozy accessories curated specifically for that palette. I thought this would help you more easily shop the shades that speak to you most. You’ll also notice a dedicated blue denim section—perfect for pairing with any look here, and for countless outfits in your everyday life. These are true keepers that will serve you beautifully for years.
You may notice something missing: the wide-leg jean. While still considered “on trend,” it has really become a staple—an essential, in my book. For this city cozy edit, I chose instead to focus on bootcut and flare jeans. Though often labeled a trend, these silhouettes are absolute wardrobe essentials.
If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you’ve heard me say this before: bootcut and flare styles are the most flattering on every body type—and they truly are. They also bring a subtle sexiness to a look that wide-leg styles, fabulous as they are, simply don’t.
As you build your looks from today’s edit, you’ll notice that many of the sweaters are longer, tunic-style silhouettes. Paired with a bootcut or flare jean, this combination lengthens and slenderizes beautifully. Jackets—whether puffers or other outerwear—can be worn short or long with this look, and we’ll dive deeper into those proportions in the near future.
For now, I wanted to plant the seed of a city cozy formula that allows you to feel relaxed and warm, while still looking polished and put together.
Neutral City Cozy Combos
When I want to be warm, I always reach for a high-neck sweater. It adds so much to my comfort. High necks include classic turtlenecks, which I recommend wearing standing tall — I love the chic of that look. High necks also include mock necks, which are just as cozy and easy to wear.
I did include one hoodie and one crewneck as well, because layering either over a white crewneck tee is always a look-popper.
Black City Cozy Combos
And then there’s black. Ladies… what more needs to be said? Black catapults every look to another level. It is, without question, the chicest color a woman can wear. A monochromatic black look stops traffic—and does so effortlessly.
Blue Denim
Even if you’re fully leaning into monochromatic dressing for your city cozy look, you’ll want to explore the blue denim options here. Every woman needs several pairs of bootcut or flare jeans in her essential wardrobe, and these selections offer stunning pieces you’ll love and wear for years—until they’re perfectly worn in (and then kept for that lived-in, distressed look I personally adore).
