Master the art of chic comfort while traveling this fall and winter…

This week, we’re updating one of our most popular blogs, The Art of Stylish Comfy Travel, to include pieces you’ll want to include in your travel wardrobe during the cold weather months.

The holiday and winter seasons often include travel for so many of us, including travel to see friends and family over the holidays, and travel to (or away from) snowy destinations to warmer beachy-type climes. Wherever you’re headed, looking your best in an easy, understated, comfy manner feels good both emotionally and physically. Here, we’ll share the secrets to this stylish mode of dress for all your adventures this fall and winter.

The art of stylish, comfy travel not only pays off in spades in terms of the obvious—comfort—but also from the standpoint of the confidence you’ll feel from looking your chicest, dressed in stunning simplicity. And let’s face it, it is also truly a divine treat for the self!

This information is a game-changer if you want to be super comfortable and look like a million when traveling.

Those of you who know me won’t be surprised that I encourage an all-black color palette. From a practical standpoint, it is the best in terms of hiding any spots you might incur during travel. And in terms of chic, I am pretty sure nothing more needs to be said. The visual impact of black is massive, and the simplicity and ease with which you can put your look together is almost mind-boggling.

All that said, enjoy and implement!

Travel Bottoms

So, what does a winning travel look consist of? It can go several ways, but let’s start with my favorite, which involves leggings, yoga pants, wide-leg pants, and these days, even lightweight, cozy joggers, which are adorable and pack so much punch. Always make sure they are fresh-looking and not anything you have been living in at home. You want to look pristine, polished, and pulled together.

For your fall and winter travel, I highly recommend cashmere as your choice for at least the bottom portion of your look.  They include joggers, leggings, flare, and wide-leg options. This soft, cozy fabric will be a treat you will savor in transit.

If you prefer jeans, go for it, but remember that you want to be comfortable, and snug jeans are not always so when traveling. You should know that when flying, doctors recommend clothing that “gives” to compensate for swelling that occurs with altitude. If you do choose the jeans route, go with bootcut/flare jeans, as they appear more put together. Need a good pair? Check out our blog, Jeans: An Absolute Wardrobe Essential.

Travel Tops

When it comes to travel tops, I am a fan of longer, fluted T-shirts. This A-line silhouette is flattering on every body shape, and you’re going to want to go with black or white when choosing colors, although, for the shopping in this post, I am only including white.

Layering is key here, as you don’t know what the temperature on the plane will be. Generally, you can count on it being freezing cold, but occasionally, it is overly warm, so having the T-shirt to layer with is a help. And if you are traveling from someplace cold to somewhere warm, being able to shed layers down to a T-shirt is essential.

Sweaters are important for the obvious reason of keeping you warm and cozy. I love the looser-fitting, fluted type of sweaters that you sometimes see cropped or tunic-length. Either way, they are figure-flattering and forgiving, ever-so-comfortable, and, of course, chic.

The crewneck and V-neck styles of the black tunic sweaters you’ll see in this section are adorable over a white T-shirt, and you can layer the high-neck sweaters for warmth and temperature versatility. Obviously, you will not see what lies beneath unless it happens to hang out from beneath the sweater hemline— which is an adorable look.

These sweaters can be worn as your third piece, as a top, or tied around your waist or shoulders. They are easy, incredibly flattering, and perfect for layering to accommodate fluctuating in-flight temperatures or for a quick wardrobe adjustment when you arrive in the tropics if that’s where your adventure takes you. I just know you’ll love them.

Travel Third Pieces

The cardigans I’ve shopped for you pair easily with T-shirts and will keep you cozy in flight.

If you are headed to a more temperate clime, an oversized denim jacket worn or tied at the waist is another way you can go in terms of your third piece. The contrast of the denim paired with an all-black color palette really pops the look.

Having said that, if you are traveling to colder climes, in my opinion, you will want a peacoat to finish your look. This, of course, is in place of the denim jacket and is easily worn over either a pullover or cardigan sweater. This timeless double-breasted jacket is ever-so-chic and a versatile piece you will use endlessly all winter long. Another option is the puffer jacket, which is practical and adorable if you’re traveling to the mountains for snow.

Regardless of the route you choose, any of the cardigans, denim jackets, peacoats, or puffers in this post will serve as the perfect third piece for your travel wear and can be considered the “glue” that pulls your chic look together.

Travel Accessories

The most important part of accessorizing for travel is your travel tote. This essential piece is a lifetime purchase and is crucial not only for travel but for most women’s daily lives. That said, find one you are possessed by, and you’ll have it forever! In addition to these extraordinary totes, I have included a few key items to put in them, including a black cashmere wrap to keep you in luxurious warmth on your way to your destination. I’ve also included travel organizers, wallets, card holders, cashmere socks to keep your feet toasty (without your shoes), noise-canceling headsets, jewelry organizers, an umbrella, and more.

I’ve also pulled together a few fabulous accessories that will polish your look as you travel in chic comfort.

Boots and Sneakers

When it comes to shoes, comfort is essential. When traveling, I always wear shoes and boots that I KNOW are comfortable. I often wear either flat sneakers (if headed to a temperate climate) or boots. If you want to do a heeled boot, just be certain they are comfy. I have included my preference in terms of ankle booties and some mid-calf and knee-high boots that will allow you to either tuck your joggers or leggings into them or wear them underneath your wide-leg bottoms for added warmth.

One added style tip regarding your boots is that you absolutely want to go with pointy toes as they will lengthen and slenderize your legs and polish your look. And if you take the time to try them on and find the right pair for you, you’ll find them to be super comfortable!

Summing it All Up

If you are traveling this fall and winter, and I hope you are, any and all of these easy-to-combine and timeless treasures are winners for sure.

Have fun as you gather pieces to serve you in your travels and beyond!
