How many of you update your surroundings on a regular basis—planting fresh flowers in the spring, and decorating with holly and poinsettias during the holidays? How about your wardrobe? Everyone loves new clothes and shoes, right?! I love buying a new tote bag every couple of years. Filling all those nice new pockets with my necessary goodies and marveling at the thoughtful and good design that went into making something so practical, yet an important part of my everyday utility wardrobe. Even our computers enjoy regular updates and maintenance making them run better and smoother. Yes, modernizing can be fun and is often necessary.
What’s your current health status like? Have you made any recent updates? Maybe you joined us earlier this year when we took the first several months to reboot your body to have you looking better for the summer through improved health choices. We’ve had a couple of months of sleep updates that may have you snoozing better and of course feeling better from improved rest. If you’re just joining us or maybe felt overwhelmed from too many options earlier this year, I invite you to modernize just one area of your life that relates to your wellbeing. It might be easier than you think!
Are you going to the gym but not enjoying it, or worse yet, paying for a gym membership that you don’t use because you don’t like going? I always advise people I work with to find something you like or love doing and do it. Look into your local recreation centers for classes or activities that are new for you to experiment with. I see a number of people who have modernized their tennis playing with pickle ball games and are having a blast!

Perhaps you eat foods or drink beverages that you might crave, be sensitive to, or even be addicted to, but you continue to buy them because they’ve been on your shopping list for years… How might you update those choices? I like substituting beverages like sodas or beer/wine with Kombucha drinks. They are fizzy and satisfying along with being a healthy choice for your intestines. Drinking spring or filtered water with a fruit slice can be a great update over sodas.
How about your means of preparing food and snacks? I am often amazed at the number of people who cook food in the microwave, even though we know there are healthier ways to cook food. You might consider picking up a steaming basket for your stove top, or a handy cast iron pan that is your go-to for cooking and warming your favorite foods.
Are you drinking diet drinks that became popular in the 80s or 90s? Diet drinks and artificial sweetener consumption are a staggering statistic in this country. Yet when we look at other countries that don’t consume artificial sweeteners like the U.S., we see that their quality of health is often better than ours.
Artificial sweeteners are toxic to your nervous system and body and over time can create a number of health problems. A better modernization might include liquid or whole leaf powder stevia, or local honey. If you are trying to cut calories, consider minimizing or eliminating simple carbs like white breads, pasta and potatoes. Instead try spiral cut veggies like yellow squash and zucchini, steamed spaghetti squash or riced cauliflower as delicious alternatives to pasta.
Sometimes updating areas in our lives invites us to make simple choices—in fact modernizing by embracing a straightforward approach for continued expansion and success. This fall, consider a health update for your and wellbeing and look better for the holidays.
