Eight Tips for Dressing Your Age While Still Looking Fabulous

Fashion Trends, Style Tips

We all remember our mothers, and no matter how beautifully they dressed there was a propriety in code of dress that was dictated. Our mothers would never consider dressing in anything that looked like their daughter’s. It was unthinkable.

Times have changed, thankfully. We look younger longer. We dress more casually than our mothers ever did thanks to culture, and the flexibility to dress like someone in their teens or twenties is a way of life. To most of this I say yay! Yet, there are some guidelines to help you find your way in looking like a million dollars as you move along the age spectrum.

The December issue of Harper’s Bazaar featured Jodie Foster on the cover and we are sharing some of the photos from that issue. The beautiful images shown below should serve as a “template” of how to look timelessly chic as you mature gracefully. I do want to point out that these same looks are applicable to the younger generations as well. These are truly timeless, ageless looks that are so versatile in terms of age that they reach across the decades.

One of the most important points to this counsel is this: as we mature simplicity is the key to creating that chic we all want to achieve. Staying away from a lot of “stuff” going on (as in flamboyant style) is the key to your looking magnificent. Think simplicity!

One of the most important points to this counsel is this: as we mature simplicity is the key to creating that chic we all want to achieve.

I remember watching a comedian talk about women, who as they progress down the age spectrum, feel they need to show lots of skin. For those of us who have arrived at, shall we call it “a certain age,” we know our skin is not the glowing beauty it once was (truthfully, though I personally miss my 20-something skin, the trade-off in terms of quality of life outweighs the loss for me…mostly). When we consider the photos of Jodie Foster, we see a marvelous example of grace and chic—and this is something we should all aspire to.

Unlike our mothers, we  have so much flexibility in how we can dress…and that is a joy. But since we all want to be our chicest best, here are a few tips to simply aid you in always looking fabulous:

Simplicity is your friend. This is now the time to do “less is more” in terms of simple, clean looks.

  • Cleaner lines, neutral colors, less going on in terms of the cut of your look.
  • Think Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy in terms of this simplicity.
    • Silhouettes that skim but do not cling.
    • Decollate is covered. Also, be aware of showing too much arm if your skin or muscle tone on your arms is not attractive. Sleeves of varying lengths are your friend.
    • Timeless and chic silhouettes such a Ms. Foster is wearing.
  • Note the white crispy longer shirt
  • The monochromatic look (here you see all winter white though it could easily be all black or all tan or all navy)
  • Simple uncluttered styles
  • Neutrals in abundance

All this withstanding, I am still a big fan of jeans, boots, sneakers, sport wear and the occasional bohemian top.
Having said that, YAY to having more options and yay to fabulous taste, timeless simple dressing, covering less than firm skin and looking show-stoppingly incredible all the time.
Take the images you see here and imprint them in your style soul to help you be your chicest. Aren’t we just so lucky to have true chic at whatever age.
